Flying Eagles advance despite Burkina Faso defeat

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles have qualified for the semi-finals of the 2026 WAFU B U-20 Championship despite losing 2-0 to Burkina Faso in their final Group B match on Sunday at the Lycée Scientifique de Yamoussoukro.

Nigeria had already secured a place in the knockout stage after opening the tournament with victories over Ghana and Togo, beating the Black Satellites 4-2 before recording a 3-0 win against Togo.

Burkina Faso took the lead in the 23rd minute through a header from a corner kick before doubling their advantage 13 minutes later with a long-range free-kick that beat the Nigerian goalkeeper.

The Burkinabe side went into the break with a two-goal advantage and maintained their lead despite Nigeria’s efforts to respond after the restart.

The Flying Eagles pushed forward in search of a goal in the second half but were unable to break down Burkina Faso’s organised defence.

Despite the defeat, Nigeria progressed to the last four on the strength of their results in the opening two group matches. The Burkinabe team also qualified, topping the group with seven points. The Flying Eagles will now turn their attention to the tournament’s semi-finals, which serve as the qualifying competition for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations, where they will play Cote d’Ivoire on August 5.
