Belgium coach Rudi Garcia has criticised FIFA’s decision to suspend the one-match ban given to United States striker Folarin Balogun, describing it as something that belongs on “April Fool’s Day” ahead of their Round of 16 clash at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Belgium will face the United States in Seattle for a place in the quarter-finals, with the co-hosts boosted by the availability of Balogun after FIFA overturned his automatic suspension.
Balogun was shown a red card during the USA’s Round of 32 victory over Bosnia-Herzegovina after a challenge from behind on defender Tarik Muharemovic.
The striker became only the fourth player to score and also receive a red card in a World Cup knockout match, but FIFA later confirmed that his one-match suspension would be suspended for one year.”
I didn’t know that at the FIFA World Cup the fifth of July is now the first of April, and it’s April Fool’s Day,” Garcia told reporters.
The Belgian coach referred to a statement released by the Royal Belgian Football Association, which said it was “astonished” by FIFA’s decision and was examining every possible course of action.”
It was a discovery for me. I think we have to refer to the communication of my federation, the Belgian federation. I think a lot of things are in there,” Garcia continued.”
The Belgian federation doesn’t defend itself, it doesn’t defend the national team, it defends football in general. It defends its integrity; it defends its ethics.””I think it’s the first time in the history of the World Cup that there is this kind of decision.”
FIFA, however, defended its decision by explaining that it acted in line with Article 27 of its disciplinary code.”In line with article 27 of the FIFA disciplinary code, the implementation of the match suspension is suspended for a probationary period of one year,” the statement read.”
If Folarin Balogun commits another infringement of a similar nature and gravity during the probationary period, the suspension shall be revoked, and the sanction enforced without prejudice to any additional sanction imposed for the new infringement.”
The decision was welcomed by United States President Donald Trump, who thanked FIFA on social media for what he described as correcting a major injustice.”
Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right and reversing a great injustice! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he wrote. Asked to respond to Trump’s remarks, Garcia declined to be drawn into the discussion, insisting that his attention remained on Belgium’s preparations for the knockout encounter.”
We have to improve; we can improve our consistency during the game,” Garcia said.”We must reach the Belgian level that I am expecting from the kick-off to the final whistle. We need to be more consistent for the 90 minutes.”
Belgium head into the match with a strong record against teams from the CONCACAF region, having won each of their last three World Cup meetings with nations from the confederation. Before that run, they had managed just two wins, one draw and three defeats in their previous six such matches.
Their only previous World Cup knockout meeting with a CONCACAF nation came in the 2014 tournament, when they defeated the United States 2-1 in the Round of 16.
