Argentina Complete’s 3–2 Comeback Against Egypt to Book Quarter-Final Place

Argentina produced another dramatic World Cup comeback as Enzo Fernandez scored a late winner to secure a 3-2 victory over Egypt at Atlanta Stadium and book their place in the quarter-finals.

Egypt shocked the defending champions by taking a two-goal lead through Yasser Ibrahim and Mostafa Zico, leaving Argentina facing the possibility of a historic World Cup exit.

Argentina struggled to find their rhythm in the early stages and fell behind in the 15th minute when Ibrahim rose above Lisandro Martinez to head Marwan Attia’s excellent cross beyond goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.

Argentina had a chance to level the score after Haissem Hassan brought down Nicolas Tagliafico inside the penalty area, but Lionel Messi’s penalty was saved by Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir, who dived to his left to keep his team ahead.

Shobeir continued to frustrate Argentina before the break, making important saves from Alexis Mac Allister’s header and Julian Alvarez’s close-range effort, while Messi also struck the post with a long-range free-kick.

Egypt went into half-time with the lead, marking the first time Argentina had trailed at the break in a World Cup match since their quarter-final defeat to Germany in 2010.

Argentina thought they had conceded another goal shortly before the hour mark when Mohamed Salah set up Mostafa Zico after a quick counterattack, but the goal was ruled out following a VAR review for a foul by Attia on Martinez during the build-up.

However, Egypt doubled their advantage in the 67th minute when Salah started another fast break and Haissem Hassan delivered a perfect cross for Zico to finish from inside the six-yard box.

The two-goal deficit forced Argentina to fight back, and they began their recovery in the 79th minute when Cristian Romero headed in Messi’s accurate cross from the right side.

Four minutes later, Messi made up for his earlier penalty miss by firing a powerful shot that went in off the crossbar despite Shobeir’s attempt to stop it, bringing Argentina level at 2-2.

With extra time approaching, Argentina completed their remarkable comeback in the second minute of stoppage time when Lautaro Martinez found space and delivered a cross for Fernandez to head home the winning goal.

The victory extended Argentina’s incredible ability to recover from difficult situations, following their previous comeback win over Cape Verde in the earlier round.

Messi made history during the match by equalling Miroslav Klose’s record for the most World Cup knockout-stage appearances with 14 matches, while also becoming the first player to miss two penalties in a single World Cup tournament, excluding shootouts.

Despite the penalty miss, Messi played a key role in the comeback by assisting Romero’s goal and scoring the equaliser. His goal was his eighth of the tournament and his 21st World Cup goal overall.

Egypt’s performance also created history as they became the first African team to lead the reigning champions by two goals in a World Cup match, although Argentina ended their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

Argentina will now face either Switzerland or Colombia in the quarter-finals as they continue their pursuit of another World Cup title.
