Spain were crowned champions of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Argentina 1-0 after extra time in the final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey on Sunday.
The victory earned Spain their second World Cup title, adding to the trophy they won in 2010 and ending Argentina’s hopes of successfully defending their crown.
Spain dominated much of the match and created the better chances throughout the contest. However, Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez produced several outstanding saves to keep his team in the game during regulation time.
After 90 minutes ended goalless, Spain finally found the breakthrough in the 106th minute of extra time. Nico Williams headed the ball into the path of Ferran Torres, who calmly finished from close range to send Spanish supporters into celebration.
Torres’ goal proved to be the difference in a final that Spain largely controlled from start to finish. The European champions limited Argentina’s attacking opportunities while continuing to threaten at the other end.
Argentina’s task became even more difficult after they were reduced to 10 men late in the match. Lionel Scaloni’s side pushed forward in search of an equaliser, but Spain’s defence remained solid until the final whistle.
The triumph completed an impressive World Cup campaign for Luis de la Fuente’s men, who combined strong defending with attacking quality throughout the tournament.
For Argentina, the defeat brought an end to their hopes of retaining the title they won in Qatar in 2022, while Spain celebrated another historic achievement on football’s biggest stage.
