Eddie Howe has stepped down as Newcastle United manager with immediate effect following discussions with the club’s hierarchy.
The 48-year-old’s departure comes after a difficult Premier League campaign last season, where Newcastle finished 12th after losing 17 of their 38 league matches.
Howe’s final match as Newcastle manager was a 4-1 defeat to Bristol City in a pre-season friendly on Wednesday, adding to concerns over the club’s direction ahead of the new season.
Reports suggest that Howe had been reviewing his future at St James’ Park in recent weeks, with his concerns increasing after changes to the squad during the summer transfer window.
The manager was reportedly unhappy with some transfer decisions, including the departure of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool, although he understood the club’s need to sell players.
Newcastle have also lost other key players, including Sandro Tonali, who joined Tottenham, and Anthony Gordon, who moved to Barcelona, while Arsenal continue their interest in captain Bruno Guimaraes.
Howe took charge of Newcastle in November 2021 after replacing Steve Bruce and helped transform the club’s fortunes. He guided the Magpies to their first major domestic trophy in 70 years by winning the 2025 Carabao Cup.
Under Howe, Newcastle also qualified for the Champions League in 2023 and 2025, reaching the last 16 of Europe’s elite competition last season before losing 8-3 on aggregate to Barcelona.
During his time at St James’ Park, Howe recorded 84 Premier League wins from 179 matches, with 38 draws and 57 defeats. His 46.9 per cent win rate ranks among the best in Newcastle’s history.
