Nigeria’s Super Falcons will look to revive their 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) campaign when they face Zambia in their second Group C match in Rabat on Saturday.
The defending champions suffered a shock 3-2 defeat to tournament debutants Malawi in their opening fixture on Tuesday, leaving the 10-time African champions without a point.
After a goalless first half, Malawi raced into a two-goal lead before three goals were scored in added time. Nigeria found the net twice, but Malawi added another to secure a memorable victory.
The Super Falcons now need a positive result at the Al Madina Stadium to improve their chances of progressing from the group stage.
Zambia head into the encounter full of confidence after a 6-0 victory over Egypt in their opening match. The Copper Queens lead Group C on goal difference and boast attacking threats including Barbara Banda, Rachael Kundananji and Grace Chanda.
Both Zambia and Malawi have three points, while Nigeria and Egypt are yet to register a point. A second consecutive win for Zambia would secure a place in the quarter-finals with one group match remaining.
Nigeria will also be aiming to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup alive. The top four teams at this year’s WAFCON will qualify automatically for the tournament in Brazil.
Saturday’s meeting also renews a growing rivalry between the two sides. Zambia defeated Nigeria in the third-place match at the 2022 WAFCON, denying the Super Falcons a medal, while Nigeria responded with a convincing 5-0 victory in the quarter-finals of last year’s competition.
The Copper Queens, now coached by Nora Häuptle, are seeking to improve on the bronze medal they won at the 2022 tournament.
