John Stones has verbally agreed to join Inter Milan on a free transfer, according to Fabrizio Romano and Sky Sports Italia, with the England defender set to undergo a medical in Milan before the move is finalised.

The 32-year-old is expected to sign a two-year contract, believed to include the option of a further year, on wages of around €4 million per season. He will replace Stefan de Vrij, who recently left the club for Greece, and link up with former Manchester City teammate Manuel Akanji in Cristian Chivu’s squad.

Stones became a free agent after his Manchester City contract expired at the end of June, bringing an end to a decade at the Etihad Stadium during which he won six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League.

He also lifted the FA Cup and Carabao Cup in his final season at the club. However, injuries limited his involvement, restricting him to just 16 appearances in Pep Guardiola’s last campaign in charge before the Spaniard departed after 10 years at Manchester City.

The defender was part of Thomas Tuchel’s England squad at this summer’s FIFA World Cup, where the Three Lions defeated France 6-4 in the third-place play-off to secure their best finish at the tournament since winning it in 1966. It was Stones’ third World Cup appearance for England.

Chelsea, Arsenal and Juventus had also registered interest in the experienced centre-back, but Inter are understood to have moved ahead in the race following positive talks over the personal terms of the deal.

The transfer has not yet been completed, with formalities, including Stones’ medical examination, still to be concluded.
