Ronald Koeman has resigned as Netherlands head coach following the team’s elimination from the FIFA World Cup, while the country’s football association has condemned racist abuse directed at several players after the defeat.
The announcement came after Dutch players Justin Kluivert, Quinten Timber and Crysencio Summerville were subjected to racist and hateful messages on social media for missing penalties during the Netherlands’ shootout loss to Morocco. The match had ended 1-1 before Morocco advanced to the Round of 16.
Koeman, 63, has ended his second spell as national team coach and suggested that he may not return to football management.
In a message shared on Instagram, Koeman said: “Looking back on my career, I feel especially proud. I have worked with clubs and people that shaped me and gave me memories that I will cherish for a lifetime.
“We all dreamed of a World Cup in which we would write history. That didn’t work out. No-one is more disappointed about that than me.
“The past years have made me realise again that there are more important things than football. Football has been my life, but health is priceless. When someone you love is fighting a tough battle, your perspective changes.”
Koeman’s decision comes as his wife, Bartina, continues her battle with breast cancer.
The Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB) said it would pursue legal action against anyone responsible for abusing its players online.
“We find this appalling,” the FA said.
“Once a report is filed, legal staff assess whether the statement constitutes a punishable offence. This can lead to a formal complaint being lodged with the Public Prosecution Service, which may then initiate a criminal investigation.”
The incident is similar to the abuse suffered by England players Marcus Rashford, Bukayo Saka and Jadon Sancho after they missed penalties in the European Championship final against Italy in 2021. That case resulted in two people receiving prison sentences, while another was handed a suspended sentence.
The KNVB added: “Football brings together millions of different people, whereas discrimination does the exact opposite. It therefore runs counter to everything football stands for.”
Dutch football expert Arthur Renard said Koeman’s contract was already due to expire, but his wife’s illness played a major role in his decision to leave. He noted that Koeman’s first spell in charge was widely regarded as successful after introducing players such as Frenkie de Jong and leading the team to impressive Nations League performances against France and Germany before leaving to manage Barcelona.
Renard said Koeman’s second spell never reached the same level, with many critics describing the team as too defensive. He pointed to the decision to field five defenders against Morocco as a major tactical change that allowed the African side to control large parts of the match. Although the Netherlands produced encouraging draws against Spain in the Nations League, he said the team never consistently matched those performances and now requires a fresh start under a new manager.
