Kylian Mbappe scored twice as France defeated Sweden 3-0 to book a place in the Round of 16 of the FIFA World Cup. The victory also saw the French captain become the highest goalscorer in World Cup knockout matches, while Bradley Barcola added the third goal to set up a meeting with Paraguay.
Sweden made a bright start to the match, with Alexander Isak creating the first opportunity, but his effort was comfortably saved by Mike Maignan. From that point, France took control of the contest and created a series of dangerous chances.
Mbappe thought he had opened the scoring midway through the first half after racing through Sweden’s defence and beating Jacob Widell Zetterstrom, but the goal was ruled out for a narrow offside. He later struck the post from close range after being left unmarked at the back post, while Michael Olise also came close with an acrobatic overhead kick that hit the woodwork before Ousmane Dembele fired the rebound wide.
France finally broke the deadlock just before halftime. Following a short corner routine, Dembele found Mbappe, who brilliantly sent Viktor Gyokeres the wrong way before curling a powerful shot into the right side of the net.
The French doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when Michael Olise threaded a precise pass through Gustaf Lagerbielke’s legs for Bradley Barcola, who finished emphatically to make it 2-0.
Olise continued to trouble Sweden’s defence in search of his first goal of the tournament. His long-range effort was tipped wide by Zetterstrom before the goalkeeper denied him again in a one-on-one situation after the hydration break.
Although he did not score, Olise registered his fifth assist of the tournament with another perfectly weighted pass that released Mbappe, who calmly lifted the ball over Zetterstrom to complete his brace and seal a convincing victory for France.
Sweden attempted to reduce the deficit late in the match when Viktor Gyokeres struck a low effort after capitalising on a loose ball, but Maignan reacted well to preserve France’s clean sheet.
Mbappe’s performance saw him reach another remarkable milestone. The forward has now scored 18 World Cup goals, moving into second place on the competition’s all-time scoring list, just one behind Lionel Messi’s 19 goals. He also drew level with Messi on six goals at this year’s tournament in the race for the Golden Boot.
Since making his World Cup debut in 2018, no player has scored more goals or registered more goal contributions than Mbappe, who now has 18 goals and 22 goal involvements. His 10 goals in World Cup knockout matches are the most by any player, surpassing the previous record shared by Leonidas and Ronaldo Nazario.
France also continued their outstanding form under Didier Deschamps, who returned to the touchline after being away following the death of his brother. The French side became the first team in World Cup history to score at least three goals in five consecutive matches, further strengthening their status as one of the favourites to win the tournament.
