Sinner Retains Wimbledon Crown After Fighting Back to Beat Zverev

World number one Jannik Sinner successfully defended his Wimbledon men’s singles title on Sunday after coming from a set down to defeat Germany’s Alexander Zverev 6-7 (7-9), 7-6 (7-2), 6-3, 6-4 in a thrilling final at the All England Club.

The Italian showed great determination after losing a closely contested opening set before taking control of the match to win his second consecutive Wimbledon title and the fifth Grand Slam trophy of his career.

The victory also gave Sinner his first major title of the 2026 season and extended his unbeaten run against Zverev to 10 matches.

“It has been an amazing final once again. It always takes two players,” Sinner said after the match.

“I’m very happy about the win but also about the level we played.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales watched the final from Centre Court alongside Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman and Ben Stiller as Sinner wrapped up victory after three hours and 46 minutes.

The 24-year-old celebrated by falling to the grass after converting championship point, becoming only the 10th man in the Open Era to successfully defend the Wimbledon men’s singles title.

Zverev, the tournament’s second seed, started brightly and won the opening set as he chased a second Grand Slam title following his French Open triumph last month. However, the German could not stop Sinner’s comeback and his losing streak against the Italian continued.

“Jannik, I don’t really like you anymore,” Zverev joked during the trophy presentation.

“He showed once again why he is the best player in the world.”

Sinner came into Wimbledon after a disappointing start to the season. He suffered an early second-round exit at the French Open after losing in the semi-finals of the Australian Open.

The Italian chose to skip all tournaments between Roland Garros and Wimbledon to focus on his fitness and mental preparation, and the decision paid off.

Although he needed five sets to overcome Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in the early rounds, Sinner improved with every match. He defeated Novak Djokovic convincingly in the semi-finals before completing another outstanding performance against Zverev in the final.

Despite the defeat, Zverev enjoyed his best Wimbledon campaign, reaching the final for the first time after never progressing beyond the quarter-finals in previous appearances.

His impressive run at the tournament is expected to lift him above the injured Carlos Alcaraz to world number two when the latest ATP rankings are released.
