South African international midfielder Jayden Adams has died at the age of 25, bringing the nation’s football community into mourning. The talented Mamelodi Sundowns player passed away on Saturday, although the cause of his death has not been made public.
Adams had recently represented Bafana Bafana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, playing in all three group-stage games as South Africa reached the knockout stage of the tournament for the first time. He, however, watched from the sidelines as his team lost 1-0 to Canada in the Round of 32 match-up.
The news of Adams’ death comes only weeks after he suffered the loss of his grandmother during the World Cup.
Tributes have continued to pour in from across the football world. South Africa’s Minister of Sport, Gayton McKenzie, joined football officials, teammates, supporters and FIFA President Gianni Infantino in paying tribute to the midfielder, describing his death as a painful loss to South African football.
The circumstances surrounding Adams’ death remain undisclosed. His family has requested privacy as they grieve. At the same time, fans and members of the football community continue to honour the life and legacy of a player whose career was regarded as one of great promise.
At club level, Adams played a key role in Mamelodi Sundowns’ successful CAF Champions League campaign. After joining the Pretoria-based side from Stellenbosch FC in January 2025, he established himself as an influential midfielder and helped the club achieve continental success.
Before his move to Sundowns, Adams enjoyed an impressive spell at Stellenbosch FC, making 139 senior appearances after becoming the club’s first academy graduate to sign a professional contract. His steady rise through South African football earned him widespread admiration and a place in the national team.
Cut short by his death, Adam’s national team career consisted of 9 appearances and two goals.
