Veteran English referee Anthony Taylor has announced his retirement from officiating with immediate effect, bringing an end to a distinguished 20-year career that saw him oversee more than 800 matches across domestic and international football.
The 47-year-old said the intense pressure and constant scrutiny that come with elite refereeing influenced his decision to step away from the game. His final assignment was Spain’s 1-0 victory over Portugal in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup on July 6.
Taylor began his refereeing journey after working as a prison officer and joined the Football League referees’ list ahead of the 2006/07 season. He was promoted to the Premier League in 2010 and went on to officiate 432 top-flight matches.
During his career, he handled every major domestic cup final in England and took charge of 668 professional matches across English football.
On the international stage, Taylor spent 14 years as a FIFA-listed referee, overseeing 163 international fixtures. He officiated at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, UEFA Euro 2020, and Euro 2024, earning a reputation as one of Europe’s most experienced match officials.
Confirming his retirement, Taylor said it was the right time to begin a new chapter in his life.
“Officiating at the elite level has been an immense privilege, but the pressure is intense and the scrutiny is constant,” Taylor said.
“The time is now right to step aside and look forward to transitioning to the next chapter of my career.”
Widely regarded as one of England’s finest referees, Taylor officiated numerous high-profile matches, including Premier League title deciders, major domestic cup finals, UEFA competitions, and FIFA tournaments.
He was also considered among the candidates to referee the 2022 FIFA World Cup final but was ruled out due to political sensitivities involving England and eventual finalists Argentina.
Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) chief refereeing officer Howard Webb paid tribute to Taylor’s contribution to football.
“Anthony has been a fantastic servant to the game over many years, both domestically and on the international stage,” Webb said.
“He has been repeatedly trusted to officiate in the biggest games.
“We thank him for his immense contribution to the game and wish him every success in the next chapter of his career.”
