The Cleveland Cavaliers have secured the long-term future of Donovan Mitchell after the All-Star guard agreed to a four-year contract extension worth $273 million.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the deal includes a player option for the 2030-31 season and a full trade kicker. It is the second contract extension Mitchell has signed since joining Cleveland in a trade from the Utah Jazz in 2022.

Although Mitchell could have earned about $80 million more by waiting until next summer, he chose to sign the new long-term deal on the first day he became eligible for an extension.

The 29-year-old has been one of Cleveland’s standout performers since arriving at the franchise, averaging 26.7 points, 5.3 assists, 4.6 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game over four seasons.

Mitchell also enjoyed another impressive campaign last season, finishing seventh in the NBA Most Valuable Player voting and earning a place in the All-NBA Second Team.

He played a key role in leading the Cavaliers to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance in eight years after the team had suffered back-to-back second-round playoff exits. During the playoffs, Mitchell averaged 26 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.2 steals in 18 games.

With Mitchell’s future secured, the Cavaliers are now expected to focus on re-signing James Harden, who recently declined his $42.3 million player option for next season.
