Nigeria’s Ruth Nyong claimed a silver medal in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after a dramatic recovery in the clean and jerk competition.

Nyong finished with a total lift of 168kg after successfully completing her final clean and jerk attempt at 93kg, having failed her first two efforts and faced the risk of elimination.

She had earlier placed third in the snatch with a personal best lift of 75kg, following successful lifts of 71kg and 75kg.

India’s Mirabai Chanu retained the gold medal, while Malaysia’s Irene Henry secured bronze.

The victory gave Chanu her third successive Commonwealth Games title in the event, following her triumphs in Birmingham in 2022 and the Gold Coast in 2018. The Indian also won silver at the 2014 Games.

Nyong’s medal added to Nigeria’s impressive showing in the weightlifting and para-powerlifting events, with the country now recording three gold and four silver medals at the Games.
