Jessica Oji wins Nigeria’s first Commonwealth shot put medal in 20 years

Jessica Oji has become the first Nigerian woman in 20 years to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the shot put after claiming silver at the Glasgow 2026 Games.

The 19-year-old produced an impressive performance in the women’s shot put event to secure a podium finish and end Nigeria’s long wait for a medal in the discipline.

ESPN Africa confirmed the achievement in a post on X, stating that Oji became the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games shot put medal since 2006.

Her silver medal also makes her the country’s first female medallist in the event since the 2002 Commonwealth Games, marking a significant milestone for Nigerian athletics.

Oji’s achievement adds to Team Nigeria’s impressive performance in Glasgow, where the country has continued to win medals in athletics, weightlifting, para powerlifting, boxing and 3×3 basketball.

With her historic silver medal, Oji has strengthened her reputation as one of Nigeria’s brightest young athletics talents while giving the country renewed hope for future success in field events.
