Three Nigerian female wrestlers have secured scholarship transfers to Iowa State University in the United States, marking a major step in their academic and sporting careers.

Kolawole Esther, Christinah Ogunsanya and Adekoye Jumoke moved from William Penn University to Iowa State University, an NCAA Division One institution, where they will compete at one of the highest levels of collegiate wrestling in the United States.

Head coach of the Nigerian women’s wrestling team, Akuh Purity, said the athletes earned the opportunity through their consistent performances at international competitions, which attracted the attention of the university’s recruiters.

Purity also credited the President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, for supporting the wrestlers’ development through financial investment and exposure to international tournaments.

He said the scholarship transfers reflected the potential of Nigerian wrestlers when given the right support and opportunities to compete on the global stage.

Purity expressed confidence that the achievement would encourage more young wrestlers to pursue excellence in both academics and sports. He also called for continued investment in grassroots wrestling and elite athlete development to create more opportunities for Nigerian talents.
