Saint-Maximin Joins Charlotte FC on Three-Year Deal As A Designated Player

Charlotte FC have completed the signing of French winger Allan Saint-Maximin following his departure from Ligue 1 club Lens at the end of last season.

The 29-year-old has signed a three-year contract with the Major League Soccer club as a designated player, taking the roster spot previously occupied by Wilfried Zaha.

Saint-Maximin arrives after helping Lens finish second behind Paris Saint-Germain in Ligue 1 and win the Coupe de France during the 2025/26 season.

Despite joining the French club in February, he made 13 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing three assists. He also completed 21 successful dribbles, the joint fourth-highest total for Lens during the campaign.

The former Newcastle United winger said he hopes to build a lasting legacy at Charlotte rather than make a short stay.

“The idea is to stay, not to stay only for three years,” Saint-Maximin said.

“I have a three-year contract, but if I can stay more, I really want to create a legacy here.

“That was my decision. This club really offered me the opportunity to become a legend here. So, that’s exactly what I want, and it’s exactly what I know I’m capable of doing.”

Charlotte have enjoyed a mixed start to the 2026 MLS season and currently sit sixth in the Eastern Conference after 15 matches.

The club has scored 24 goals so far this season, and general manager Zoran Krneta believes Saint-Maximin will add more quality to the team’s attack.

“Maxi is an elite attacking talent who has consistently performed at the highest levels of our sport, including in the Premier League,” Krneta said.

“We’re delighted to bring a player of his quality to Charlotte while he is in the prime of his career.

“His creativity, speed, technical ability and flair make him immediately one of the most exciting players in Major League Soccer.

“Adding a player with his pedigree, experience, and winning mentality will bolster our attacking options and strengthen the team overall.”

Charlotte FC will return to MLS action after the FIFA World Cup break on July 22 when they host Atlanta United at the Bank of America Stadium.
