FIFA President Gianni Infantino has offered up to $40 million to each member association that supports the governing body’s proposal to sell minority stakes in its major competitions.

According to a letter obtained by the BBC, member associations that approve the proposal by September 19 will receive an initial $20 million from January 1, 2027, with another $20 million to follow.

The proposal involves creating a commercial subsidiary, FIFA Forward Enterprise, to manage major competitions, including the men’s and women’s World Cups and the Club World Cup. The new company would allow external investors to acquire minority stakes.

Infantino said the plan could generate up to $10 billion to expand funding for football development across the world. He described the proposal as an opportunity for member associations and said it was his responsibility to present initiatives that could strengthen the growth of the game.

The proposal has, however, drawn criticism from several football organisations over concerns about governance, transparency and the possible influence of private investors on FIFA’s competitions.

The Football Association said it was not consulted before the proposal was announced and questioned both the process and the lack of detailed information.

The development comes as UEFA’s 55 member associations prepare to hold an emergency meeting later this week to discuss the proposal and its potential impact on the future governance and commercial structure of world football.
