Ajayi equals Nigerian 100m record in London win

Nigeria’s Kayinsola Ajayi equalled the national 100m record after winning the men’s event at the London Diamond League with a time of 9.84 seconds.

Ajayi finished ahead of reigning world champion Oblique Seville of Jamaica, who clocked 9.87 seconds, while Great Britain’s Romell Glave came third in a personal best of 9.97 seconds.

The winning time matched the Nigerian record that Ajayi previously set at the NCAA East Regionals in Lexington, Kentucky. It was also the third time this season that the sprinter has run 9.84 seconds, having equalled the mark on his Diamond League debut at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon, where he also finished ahead of Seville and former world champion Christian Coleman.

The victory is another major result in Ajayi’s impressive season as he continues to establish himself among the world’s leading sprinters.

The performance also boosts Nigeria’s preparations for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, with Ajayi showing strong form against a world-class field.

Nigeria also had African record holder Ezekiel Nathaniel in action at the London meeting. He competed in the men’s 400m hurdles against a field that included world record holder Karsten Warholm of Norway and American athlete Trevor Bassitt.

Ajayi and Nathaniel are expected to join Team Nigeria in Aberdeen ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
