Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has become the first athlete from the country to win the men’s shot put gold medal at the Commonwealth Games after producing a winning throw of 21.07m in Glasgow, Scotland.
The 33-year-old secured victory with his fifth attempt at Scotstoun Stadium, finishing ahead of defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand, who settled for silver after an opening throw of 21.03m. England’s Scott Lincoln claimed the bronze medal with a throw of 20.99m.
The triumph marks a major milestone for Enekwechi, who improved on the silver medal he won at the 2018 Commonwealth Games after finishing fourth at the Birmingham 2022 edition.
The Olympic Games confirmed his victory on its official X account, describing him as the winner of the men’s shot put final.
Enekwechi had shown his title credentials during the qualifying round, where he reached the final with a single throw of 20.03m to finish top of Group B.
The African record holder has enjoyed a successful career, winning five African titles before adding a historic Commonwealth Games gold medal to his achievements.
His victory also increased Nigeria’s medal tally at the 2026 Commonwealth Games to 15, made up of eight gold, five silver and two bronze medals.
