Team Nigeria added three more gold medals to their tally at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Monday as weightlifters Rafiatu Folashade Lawal, Edidiong Joseph Umoafia and Onome Omolola Didih delivered record-breaking performances.

Lawal claimed gold in the women’s 58kg event after lifting a combined total of 229kg, setting a new Commonwealth Games record. She opened with a 103kg snatch before completing a 126kg clean and jerk to finish ahead of Canada’s Ann-Sophie Taschereau, who won silver with 215kg, while India’s Bindyarani Devi Sorokhaibam took bronze with 199kg.

Earlier, Umoafia won the men’s 71kg title with a combined lift of 319kg, another Commonwealth Games record. He recorded a 147kg snatch and a 172kg clean and jerk to finish ahead of Samoa’s John Lautafi Tafi, who claimed silver with 314kg, while Nauru’s Ezekiel Moses secured bronze with 310kg.

Didih also secured gold in the women’s 53kg category after setting a new Commonwealth and Games record with a 93kg snatch before completing a total lift of 206kg, which also established a new Games record. India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav won silver with 199kg, while Canada’s Rebeka Groulx claimed bronze with 178kg.

The latest victories increased Nigeria’s medal haul to six gold and four silver medals at the Games. The country’s weightlifting team has now won three gold and one silver medal, adding to the success of the para powerlifting team, where Esther Nworgu, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Riluwan Idris won gold, while Esther Oyema, Roland Ezuruike and Rita Ferdinand earned silver.

Team Nigeria will now look to build on its strong performance as the athletics events gather pace at the Games.
