NBA legend LeBron James will leave the Los Angeles Lakers to continue his career with a different team.
The 41-year-old spent eight seasons with the Lakers, helping the club win the 2020 NBA championship. He also made history by playing alongside his 21-year-old son, Bronny James, from 2024.
Reports indicate that the Golden State Warriors are among the teams interested in signing the NBA’s all-time leading scorer.
In a statement, the Lakers said: “LeBron James is one of the greatest athletes in history.
“We will always be grateful for his eight years with the Lakers – including the title he led us to in 2020, under the most difficult circumstances imaginable, and the countless records he broke in purple and gold.
“We wish him the best in his future, both on and off the court. He will always be a cherished member of the Lakers family.”
James finished this season with averages of 20.9 points, 7.2 assists and 6.1 rebounds per game. The 22-time All-Star and four-time NBA champion remains the league’s all-time leader in games played with 1,622 appearances and 43,440 career points.
He was selected first overall in the 2003 NBA Draft by his hometown team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, where he played for seven seasons before announcing during the live television special, ‘The Decision’, that he was joining the Miami Heat.
After his time in Miami, James returned to Cleveland and led the Cavaliers to a remarkable comeback from a 3-1 series deficit in the 2016 NBA Finals against Golden State, delivering the franchise’s first-ever NBA championship.
He later guided the Lakers to the 2020 NBA title, achieved nine months after club icon Kobe Bryant and his daughter Gianna were among the nine people who lost their lives in a helicopter crash.
